About this coinHistory

The 1868 proof gold dollar was produced in an estimated mintage of 25 coins, one of the lower proof figures in the series. Andrew Johnson survived impeachment by a single vote that spring, and the country was still processing the social and political upheaval of Reconstruction. The small proof run reflects a collector market that remained thin during the postwar years.

Surviving 1868 proof gold dollars are rare. The low estimated mintage ensures that certified examples in any grade carry significant premiums. The proof format provides the clearest view of Longacre's Type 3 design, with mirrored fields and sharply defined devices.
