About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1869 fell to 5,925 gold dollars. The transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit in May, connecting East and West by rail for the first time, but the gold dollar's production remained locked in its postwar doldrums. Gold continued to trade at a premium over greenbacks, and the coins served financial purposes that had nothing to do with the pockets of ordinary citizens.

PCGS estimates roughly 50 to 75 survive across all grades. The coin is scarce in all conditions, with Extremely Fine examples already commanding attention and Uncirculated coins drawing premium bidding. The 1869 sits in the middle of the low-mintage postwar run and offers no easier path for collectors than its neighboring dates.
