About this coinHistory

3,530 gold dollars were struck in 1872, one of the lowest Philadelphia mintages in the series. The denomination had been declining in relevance since the war ended, and the Coinage Act of 1873 would soon discontinue several other obsolete denominations (including the two-cent piece, three-cent silver, and half dime). The gold dollar survived the 1873 legislation, but its production volumes suggested a denomination kept alive by institutional inertia.

PCGS estimates roughly 50 to 75 survive across all grades. Most grade between Fine and Extremely Fine. Uncirculated examples are scarce. The 1872 sits near the bottom of the annual mintage table for the series and demands active searching from collectors pursuing a complete date set.
