About this coinHistory

The 1877 proof gold dollar was produced in an estimated mintage of 20 coins. The Great Railroad Strike consumed the country's attention that summer, but the Mint's proof program continued without interruption. Proof gold dollars from the late 1870s represent some of the lowest proof mintages in the series, reflecting a collector market that remained small during the prolonged economic downturn following the Panic of 1873.

Surviving 1877 proof gold dollars are very rare. Certified examples in any grade are difficult to locate, and coins in PR64 or better are especially elusive. The proof provides the finest expression of the Type 3 design for this year.
