The 1883 proof gold dollar was produced in an estimated mintage of 207 coins, one of the highest proof figures in the Type 3 series. The growing American numismatic community supported increasing proof purchases through the 1880s, and the Mint responded with larger production runs. The proof gold dollar was part of the annual proof set that collectors could order directly from Philadelphia.
The 1883 proof is among the more available proof gold dollars. Certified examples can be located through major auction houses and dealers, and the higher mintage means that collectors can be more selective about quality and eye appeal. Gems in PR66 or better are still scarce, but PR63 to PR65 examples appear with reasonable regularity.
