About this coinHistory

This is the only formal Proof of the first regular-issue date in the Liberty Head Double Eagle series, the coin that opens the Type 1 No Motto run that James B. Longacre designed and that Philadelphia placed into commerce in 1850. The 1849 piece preceded it as a pattern and remains a single coin held in the National Numismatic Collection, so the 1850 Proof represents the first time the new denomination was struck in Proof format for a circulating issue. Walter Breen suggested perhaps three specimens were prepared, and John W. Dannreuther's research on the complete 1850 Proof set indicates the double eagle was distributed alongside companion pieces from that single year's tiny presentation effort.

The design follows the original Type 1 layout, with Longacre's coronet portrait on the obverse and the small heraldic eagle bearing the TWENTY D. denomination on the reverse with no motto above. Census data is correspondingly thin. Dannreuther accounts for two specimens, the cleaned PR61 held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris and the privately held example traced from the 1870 Longacre Estate sale through the Dr. C.W. Green cabinet and B. Max Mehl auction descriptions, with Karl Moulton's reconstruction linking those records to a single coin. PCGS and NGC populations remain in the low single digits across all grades, and authentication relies on die diagnostics, mirrored fields, squared rims, and the absence of strike characteristics seen on the corresponding business strike.

Market position reflects an issue that almost never trades. The Paris example is institutional and effectively off the market, leaving the Longacre estate descendant as the only specimen realistically available to advanced collectors, and even that coin surfaces only across generational intervals. Provenance lines connect to the foundational cabinets of 19th and 20th century American numismatics, including the Longacre family and Dr. C.W. Green, and any future appearance would draw the kind of attention paid to the unique 1849 piece itself. Type 1 Proofs from 1851 through 1858 sit in the same extreme-rarity tier, with regular Proof availability not arriving until the 1859 issue of eighty pieces. For broader context, see the Liberty Head Double Eagle series history.
