About this coinHistory

New Orleans struck 190,000 double eagles dated 1852, a 40 percent decline from the 315,000 1851-O peak as branch-mint production began contracting toward the much smaller mintages of the mid-1850s. The output sat between the 1851-O high-water mark and the dramatic 71,000-piece 1853-O figure that followed, situating 1852-O in the early phase of the long O-mint mintage decline that ran through the Civil War. Production drew on Louisiana sugar and cotton trade gold deposits and on Mississippi River and Gulf Coast commerce, the same regional economic base that had supported the 1850 and 1851 issues. The O mint mark appears below the eagle on the reverse. Design specifications are unchanged from the prior O-mint issues: Type I Liberty Head obverse with thirteen stars, heraldic eagle reverse with shield and TWENTY D., reeded edge.

Strike quality on 1852-O is variable, in line with the broader pattern of New Orleans double eagle production during this period. Typical examples show some softness in Liberty's hair detail and the eagle's central feathers, with rim and field areas often retaining better detail than the high points. Wear on circulated coins concentrates on Liberty's hair above the ear, the coronet, and the eagle's shield and breast feathers. Survival is weighted heavily toward Fine through Extremely Fine grades; AU examples are scarce and Mint State coins are individually significant when they appear at public sale. Counterfeit exposure is meaningful for early O-mint Liberty Head double eagles; PCGS or NGC certification is the standard authentication path for any 1852-O priced above bullion floor.

Market position for 1852-O sits in the semi-key tier of the Type I subset, with pricing that reflects both the lower mintage relative to 1851-O and the smaller surviving Mint State population. Pricing through Extremely Fine runs in the mid four to high four figures, AU examples reach into the high four to low five figures, and MS60 jumps into the mid five-figure range above $32,000. MS63 examples cross into six-figure territory near $170,000 at current market, making the 1852-O a notably more expensive Mint State acquisition than the 1851-O at the same grade. Collector demand comes primarily from date-and-mint set builders treating the 1852-O as a required acquisition, with secondary demand from Type I specialists pursuing complete O-mint representation. Acquisition is certified only at any grade given the counterfeit environment and the steep pricing differentials between adjacent grade tiers.
