About this coinHistory

New Orleans struck 6,600 double eagles in 1860, one of the lowest O-mint outputs in the entire series. Only the 1856-O at 2,250 and 1879-O at 2,325 fall below it, with the 1854-O at 3,250 close behind. The figure reflects the southern Mint's thinning gold reserves in the final full year of federal control: California bullion that had reached New Orleans through coastal shipping during the 1850s was being redirected to other destinations, and the facility was working from a constrained metal stock. The coin shares the unchanged Type I design with its Philadelphia and San Francisco counterparts, with the mint mark O placed below the eagle on the reverse.

Survival is small. PCGS and NGC combined population reports account for fewer than 200 examples across all grades, with the great majority distributed across Very Fine through About Uncirculated. Mint State coins are rare events. The PCGS condition census shows only a handful of pieces certified at MS61 and above, and any appearance at MS62 or finer draws concentrated auction attention. The date carries additional historical weight as the final full year of federal double eagle coinage at the New Orleans Mint; the facility passed to Confederate authority in late January 1861, and 1861-O coinage afterward is divided by die analysis between federal and southern strikes. The 1860-O carries no such ambiguity.

For collectors of the New Orleans Type I subset and for advanced Liberty Head double eagle specialists, the 1860-O is a genuine Key Date. Auction appearances are events, and circulated VF examples command substantial premiums over common-date Type I issues. CAC stickers add further premium where present. Strike on the date is generally adequate, though marks from shipping and bullion-grade handling are common, and original surfaces with even color are particularly prized. For broader Type I context and the place of the New Orleans rarities in the series, see the Liberty Head Double Eagle series history.
