About this coinHistory

Struck in the closing months of the Civil War, the 1864 Liberty Head Double Eagle Proof represents one of the most coveted Type 1 No Motto rarities in the entire federal gold series. Philadelphia delivered just 50 proofs that year, a tiny ceremonial issue alongside the 204,285 circulation strikes earmarked for commerce and West Coast bullion shipments. Attrition was severe, as collectors of the era often spent or melted their proof gold once values rose, and modern researchers estimate only 13 to 15 examples survive across all grading tiers. Two anchor specimens reside in institutional cabinets, one at the Smithsonian National Numismatic Collection and a second at the American Numismatic Society, leaving roughly nine to 12 pieces available to private collectors at any moment.

Quality among the survivors varies dramatically, and the cameo contrast separating the finest pieces from merely brilliant proofs is what drives spirited competition at auction. The PCGS census through late 2023 records two PR64 examples, three PR64 Cameo, one PR64+ Cameo, a single PR65 Deep Cameo, and a lone PR67 Deep Cameo at the apex. That PR67 DCAM is widely regarded as one of the two finest Type 1 double eagle proofs of any date, with mirror fields so deep they read jet black against frosted devices under proper lighting. CAC has approved a small subset, including two PR64 Cameo coins, a PR64 DCAM, the PR65 DCAM, and the PR67 DCAM benchmark.

Auction history confirms the issue's blue-chip status. Heritage realized $359,375 for an NGC PR65 Ultra Cameo in January 2011, then $352,500 for an NGC PR65 Star Ultra Cameo in August 2012, both prior to the most recent market revaluation. The category-defining moment came on September 25, 2022, when GreatCollections sold an NGC Proof 65 Ultra Cameo for $613,125 after 71 bids carried the result well past pre-sale estimates, a price that established a new ceiling for the date. Earlier landmarks include a Heritage 2018 sale of a Proof 64 Cameo at $240,000 and a 2007 Heritage offering of a Proof 64 Cameo at $184,000.
