The 1866 proof Liberty Head double eagle stands as the inaugural issue of the Type 2 With Motto proof series, and as one of the foundational rarities of nineteenth-century American gold. The Act of March 3, 1865 directed that IN GOD WE TRUST be added to coins of suitable size, and Chief Engraver James B. Longacre executed that mandate on the double eagle by enlarging the reverse circle of stars and seating the motto on a scroll inside it. The Philadelphia Mint then struck just 30 proofs of the new design, delivering 25 pieces for proof sets on January 15, 1866 and five additional examples on June 8. No other date in the Type 2 series carries the historical weight of a first-year-of-issue proof, which is precisely why this coin anchors any serious cabinet of proof double eagles.
Survivorship is brutal. Researchers including John Dannreuther estimate roughly 14 to 16 examples survive across all grades, with a published roster of around ten traceable pieces (a few permanently impounded in institutional holdings). Combined PCGS and NGC certification totals sit in the mid-teens, and resubmissions inflate even that figure. Cameo and Deep Cameo / Ultra Cameo designations exist, though brilliant proofs without contrast are also known. Authentication centers on JD-1, the single die pair used for the issue, with diagnostic die markers familiar to specialists. The finest known is the PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo from the Clapp and Trompeter cabinets, a coin profiled in a PCGS Coin of the Issue feature and described as the single finest Type 2 proof double eagle for the entire 1866 to 1876 series.
Public offerings are scarce. The Heritage CSNS Platinum Night sale of April 2017 brought a PR65 Cameo NGC with a gold CAC sticker, which had been off the market for 24 years and realized $517,000, then a record for the issue. Levels above PR65 trade only privately, and the finest-known PR67 DCAM has changed hands quietly in the seven-figure range. Collectors pursuing this date should expect long waits, examine surfaces critically given how many survivors carry handling marks, and weigh CAC verification heavily. For the wider context behind this design transition, see the Liberty Head Double Eagle series history.
