About this coinHistory

Carson City's fifth double eagle delivery brought a striking change of scale to a young branch mint that had spent its first four years rationing output through a single press. The 115,085-piece run nearly tripled the combined Carson production of 1870 through 1873, and that surge fundamentally altered the date's collecting profile. Where the earliest CC double eagles command Big Five rarity premiums, the 1874-CC opened the door for type collectors and Carson City specialists who wanted a genuine frontier-mint $20 without chasing a five-figure entry-level coin. The issue arrived during the Type 2 reverse era, with IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle and the abbreviated TWENTY D. denomination at the base.

Survival, not mintage, governs the actual market. Specialists estimate roughly 2,000 to 2,500 examples extant, with the population concentrated in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades from circulation in Nevada, San Francisco commerce, and European bank vaults that later returned U.S. gold. About-Uncirculated coins surface with regularity, while properly graded AU58 examples thin noticeably and Mint State pieces are genuinely rare, perhaps a dozen total across PCGS and NGC certified holders. Strike quality reflects Carson's chronic die fatigue and limited press maintenance: weak central detail on Liberty's hair and the eagle's shield is typical, and fully struck examples carry a premium independent of grade.

Auction performance reinforces the condition-rarity story. A PCGS MS62 example crossed the block at Heritage Auctions on August 19, 2018 for $90,000, and a PCGS MS61 brought $26,400 at Stack's Bowers in August 2024, both confirming the steep premium attached to original Mint State surfaces. Authentication remains essential. The Philadelphia 1874 issue is plentiful and dimensionally identical, and added-CC mintmark forgeries on Philly hosts have circulated for decades; toolmarks around the mintmark, glue residue, and softness in the field-to-mintmark transition are the standard diagnostic flags. For collectors building a Carson City type set or pursuing the date run, this issue remains the most accessible early CC twenty and a foundational chapter in the Liberty Head Double Eagle series history.
