About this coinHistory

The 1878 proof Liberty Head double eagle was struck in Philadelphia at a reported figure of just twenty pieces, the second year of proof production under the new Type 3 reverse legend that spelled out TWENTY DOLLARS in full. That output ties the 1878 with the 1877 inaugural Type 3 proof for the lowest mintage of the early Type 3 era, sitting one tier below the thirty proofs recorded for 1879. Cataloged as JD-1 with a single working die pair, the 1878 is rated Low R.7 in the Sheldon system by John Dannreuther, with a present-day survival estimate generally placed at eight to twelve coins across all grades.

Surfaces on confirmed examples display the deeply mirrored, watery fields and frosted devices that define a finished Philadelphia proof rather than a high-grade business strike, and that visual contrast is the first authentication checkpoint. PCGS and NGC have certified only a handful of 1878 proofs between them, with Cameo designations issued sparingly and Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo attributions rarer still. Most certified pieces fall in the PR63 to PR64 band, leaving the gem tier extremely thin. Provenance, prior auction appearances, and confirmation of single-die JD-1 die markers are central to authentication, and any 1878 proof acquisition warrants direct verification of certification and pedigree.

Public auction activity is sparse because so few coins exist. Heritage Auctions sold a PR64 Cameo NGC example, attributed JD-1 and Low R.7, on February 24, 2022 for $69,000, a result that reflects the date's structural rarity rather than its visibility on want lists. Earlier records include a PR65 Cameo result of $47,500 at Bowers and Ruddy in March 1980, a figure that, in real terms, compares closely with current bids for similarly graded survivors. Although the 1878-CC business strike often dominates date-level discussion within Doug Winter's Carson City framework, the Philadelphia proof stands as a separate condition rarity, and any documented offering should be evaluated alongside the broader Liberty Head Double Eagle series history.
