About this coinHistory

The 1887 proof Liberty Head Double Eagle stands as the third and final proof-only Philadelphia issue in the series, following the 1883 and 1884 proofs that opened the trio. Philadelphia struck no circulation strike double eagles that year, leaving the 121-piece proof run as the only twenty-dollar gold pieces bearing a Philadelphia obverse for 1887. The 1887 mintage is the largest of the three proof-only years, exceeding the 92 pieces struck in 1883 and the 71 reported for 1884. Production reportedly arrived in quarterly batches, suggesting steady collector demand throughout the year. After 1887 the Mint resumed regular Philadelphia business-strike production, beginning with 226,161 pieces in 1888, which makes 1887 a structural endpoint for any complete date set of the series.

All examples trace to a single die pair catalogued as JD-1 by John Dannreuther, who rates the issue High R.5 with an estimated 30 to 40 survivors across all grades. Cameo contrast varies, since later strikes from the lone die pair show diminished frost on the devices, while better impressions display richly frosted central motifs against deeply mirrored fields. PCGS and NGC have certified the issue with Cameo and Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo designations, and the finest reported is a PR67+ Cameo at NGC. Authentication centers on confirming proof characteristics, including squared rims, full mirrored fields, and the absence of any S mintmark.

Market activity confirms the structural premium attached to the proof-only Philadelphia trio. A PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS example with CAC approval, drawn from the Mocatta Collection, realized $420,000 at Stack's Bowers in August 2022, where the cataloger noted only three coins finer at PCGS. Heritage's January 2022 Bob R. Simpson Collection sale carried a PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS to $456,000, and lower-tier results in Cameo PR64 territory have settled in the mid-six figures. Demand for the issue tracks closely with completion projects involving the 1883 and 1884 proofs, since no Philadelphia business strike substitute exists.
