Among Carson City double eagles, this issue occupies an interesting middle ground that frustrates simple labels. Specialists pursuing a complete CC twenty set will not stumble over the 1892-CC the way they will over the 1870-CC or any of the so-called Big Five, yet the date carries weight as the thirteenth Carson City entry in the denomination and one of the final issues struck before the mint's 1893 closure. Doug Winter places it in his Tier Four group of "common" CC double eagles, alongside neighbors like the 1890-CC and 1893-CC. That ranking surprises collectors who fixate on the figure of 27,265 pieces struck and assume the date must be elusive in absolute terms.
Survival reality matters more than mintage here. Q. David Bowers estimates roughly 800 to 1,200 examples remain in circulated grades, with somewhere between 150 and 225 Mint State pieces, the bulk concentrated at MS60 through MS62 and largely traceable to European repatriation waves of the late twentieth century. Choice uncirculated coins are decidedly scarce, and gem MS65 examples are genuinely rare. Strike quality is usually acceptable for a CC product of this period, though softness on the eagle's neck feathers and around the central stars on the obverse turns up regularly enough that buyers should evaluate detail before committing at higher grade levels.
Auction performance reflects the date's split personality. A PCGS MS62 example offered by Stack's Bowers as part of the Fairmont Collection group realized $45,600, a number that shows how aggressively choice mint-state CC twenties trade despite the issue's "common" tier label. Authentication remains the first hurdle: the most prevalent danger with CC double eagles overall is mintmark addition or alteration on Philadelphia or San Francisco hosts, so insistence on PCGS or NGC encapsulation, ideally with a CAC sticker, is non-negotiable for serious money.
