About this coinHistory

The 1907-D Special Strike double eagle is the final proof Liberty Head twenty produced at the Denver Mint and one of the last branch mint proofs of the Coronet design ever struck. Coining operations at Denver had begun only the year before, and the small group of carefully prepared 1907-D pieces was produced as the long-running Liberty Head series wound toward its end, with the Saint-Gaudens design replacing it later that same year. Walter Breen recorded a striking date of September 30, 1907 for the PCGS-graded example, and surviving research treats the issue as a deliberate end-of-design presentation rather than a routine proof delivery. Confirmed survivors number roughly four to six pieces, placing the 1907-D alongside the 1906-D Special Strike as one of only two branch mint proof issues in the entire Liberty Head double eagle catalog and the closing entry in the line.

Major grading services classify the coin as a Specimen rather than a formal Philadelphia proof. NGC uses the SP designation while PCGS records the issue as a Branch Mint Proof, and John Dannreuther catalogued the surviving examples as products of his JD-1 die pair, with diagnostic dentil and mintmark positioning ties confirming all three certified pieces share the same dies. Surfaces show satiny, lightly prooflike reflectivity rather than the deeply mirrored fields of contemporary Philadelphia proofs, with sharp design definition through Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers. Certified populations across both services remain in the low single digits, the finest known being a piece graded SP65 by NGC, and authentication by PCGS or NGC is treated as essential given the absence of contemporary Mint documentation for the delivery.

Public market activity is correspondingly thin. The PCGS Branch Mint Proof example traces its pedigree to the collection of Egypt's King Farouk and was sold in the Sotheby's Palace Collections sale of 1954, while the finest NGC SP65 piece appeared at Heritage's 2020 Long Beach Signature auction without prior public record. Trophy buyers pursuing branch mint proof gold rank the 1907-D and 1906-D as the two essential pieces, with the 1907-D carrying the additional distinction of closing the Liberty Head era at Denver.
