About this coinHistory

The 1859-S is the sixth-year San Francisco eagle and the smallest delivery of any Pacific $10 in this stretch, just 7,000 pieces, well below the already-thin 11,800 of 1858-S and a fraction of the eastern Philadelphia issue from the same year. The contraction reflects how little San Francisco bullion was being committed to ten-dollar coinage in 1859, with most western gold absorbed into double eagles for trans-Pacific commerce. The entire delivery went straight into hard hand-to-hand circulation, and almost nothing was set aside. Doug Winter places survival at roughly four dozen pieces across all grades, with as few as six or seven examples reaching the About Uncirculated tier and zero certified Mint State coins on either census, a date that defines genuine condition rarity within the No Motto San Francisco subset.

Authentication should confirm the statutory 16.718-gram weight and specific gravity near 17.2, with close inspection of the S mintmark seated below the eagle's tail; added mintmarks lifted from common Philadelphia 1859 eagles are the standard deception at this date level and should be checked under magnification for tooling marks or seam evidence. Strike on genuine pieces is generally acceptable for the issue, though most survivors show the heavy uniform wear consistent with circulation through the booming San Francisco economy of the early 1860s. As with the 1858-S, original surfaces matter more than grade, Winter has cautioned that many high-grade survivors have been dipped, rim-filed, or otherwise improved, and a problem-free EF45 with honest skin generally represents better collector value than a compromised AU55.

The collecting landscape places this issue squarely in the top tier of San Francisco Liberty Eagles. A PCGS AU55 example brought $25,228 at Heritage's August 2018 ANA Signature Sale, and the small handful of AU coins that surface tend to set date records on each appearance. Problem-free EF pieces trade in the upper four figures to low five figures, with any approach to Mint State unprecedented in modern certification. For the No Motto type collector building the San Francisco run, the 1859-S sits with the 1855-S and 1858-S as the trio of genuine condition rarities that define difficulty in this branch series, ranking just below the 1864-S itself.
