The 1866-S No Motto is the final No Motto Liberty Head eagle ever struck, closing a design type that ran from 1838. Congress mandated the IN GOD WE TRUST motto for the eagle in 1865, but San Francisco exhausted its first half of 1866 production before the new With Motto reverse dies arrived from Philadelphia. The result is a transitional issue of roughly 8,500 pieces struck from the old reverse working dies that should have already been retired. Every coin from the second half of 1866 production at San Francisco carries the motto. The No Motto coins do not, and there will never be another.
Doug Winter places this issue among the four genuinely very rare dates within the eleven-coin San Francisco No Motto eagle subseries, with PCGS estimating roughly 30 to 50 survivors across all grades. Most known examples grade VF or below; anything in the EF45 to AU range is a serious condition rarity, and Mint State pieces are essentially unobtainable. For authentication, confirm the reverse shows a clean scroll above the eagle with no motto present, since added-motto alterations and re-engraved fields have been attempted on this issue. Verify the S mintmark sits cleanly below the eagle with no tooling at the base, and confirm the standards: 16.718 grams, 27 mm diameter, and a specific gravity near 17.2 consistent with the .900 gold alloy. Genuine survivors typically show heavy bagmarks and rub on Liberty's cheek and the eagle's breast.
Among collectors building either a No Motto type set or a complete San Francisco eagle run, this date is the gateway requirement and the most historically significant coin in the entire series end. Pricing reflects both the absolute scarcity and the transitional status: VF examples command serious five-figure premiums, and EF or better pieces enter strong five-figure territory when they appear at major sales. Patience matters, since multiple years can pass between meaningful auction appearances.
