About this coinHistory

Struck during the McKinley prosperity that pushed Philadelphia's annual eagle output past 1.7 million pieces, the 1901 proof Liberty Head $10 occupies a quieter corner of the same year's gold record. Dannreuther's research places the proof delivery at roughly 85 coins, a figure consistent with Mint Director records that show proof gold sales concentrating among a small group of Eastern collectors and a handful of European dealers. Surviving population today runs in the 35 to 45 range across both major services, with PCGS and NGC combined showing a modest cluster between PR63 and PR65 and only a thin scatter above. The issue is cataloged as JD-1, the lone working die pair Dannreuther documents for the year.

Authenticators rely on two diagnostics to separate the genuine brilliant proof from prooflike business strikes that occasionally chase the same grade. First, the rims should display the squared, knife-edge profile that comes only from multiple blows of polished dies against a polished planchet, a feature business-strike specimens cannot reproduce regardless of fields. Second, the mirrors must run uninterrupted into the date and stars without the soft, satiny halos typical of frosted Mint State surfaces. Cameo contrast, when present, is restrained on this date because the dies were lightly basined; the JD-1 working pair shows only modest frosting on Liberty's hair and the eagle's breast feathers, and Deep Cameo designations are accordingly scarce. Weight should fall within the 16.718 gram standard with virtually no tolerance variation on a hand-struck proof of this period.

Auction history reflects both the rarity and the date's quiet reputation among Liberty eagle proof specialists. A PR65 Deep Cameo example crossed the block at Sotheby's in June 1998 for $63,250, a benchmark figure that subsequent appearances at Heritage and Stack's Bowers have approached but rarely matched in equivalent grade with comparable cameo. Doug Winter notes that demand for proof Liberty eagles has historically lagged proof double eagles of the same year, leaving the 1901 a relative value within an already small surviving universe. Collectors building a date set will encounter this issue more often than the deep-rarity proofs of the 1860s and 1870s but should still budget for patience, as gem cameo offerings appear only every few years.
