About this coinHistory

The 1907 Liberty Head proof eagle is the last collector strike the Mint ever produced of Christian Gobrecht's Coronet $10 design, closing a proof program that had run, with gaps, since the 1840s. Philadelphia delivered approximately 74 pieces to subscribers early in the year, after which Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Indian Head replaced the Liberty design mid-1907 and ended any further Coronet proof production. Like every Liberty proof eagle from 1902 onward, the issue carries the Mint's all-brilliant finish rather than the brilliant-and-frosted cameo treatment of the 1880s and 1890s, with deeply mirrored fields extending uniformly across both the obverse portrait and the reverse heraldic eagle. John Dannreuther catalogs the date as JD-1, the single die pair documented for the year.

Survivor estimates place roughly 35 to 55 examples in collector hands, giving the issue a Sheldon rating in the R.5 range. The all-brilliant format makes authentication unusually demanding because the absence of frosted devices removes the cameo contrast that ordinarily distinguishes a proof from a prooflike business strike. Genuine examples show squared, knife-edge rims; a full wire rim around the dentils on both sides; and the deep, watery reflectivity that develops only from multiple slow-speed impressions against highly polished dies. Hairlines from period wiping are widespread and pin most survivors into the PR60 to PR63 band, with gem-quality coins above PR65 genuinely scarce. Suspicious examples should be checked for the soft, rounded device edges and uneven mirroring typical of polished business strikes attempting to pose as proofs.

Auction results cluster in the PR62 to PR64 range with five-figure prices standard, while gems push into the low six figures when they appear. The 1907 sits at the terminal end of the 1902 through 1907 all-brilliant cohort, and its position as the final Coronet $10 proof ever struck gives it a category significance that registry collectors and gold type specialists weigh against the issue's visual restraint. After this date, no Liberty Head Eagle proof would ever be made again, making the coin a true closing bookend on a sixty-nine-year design.
