The 1840-D Small D half eagle is the scarcer of two mintmark-punch varieties struck at Dahlonega from a combined coinage of 22,896 pieces. It also belongs to the year that moved the D mintmark from the obverse, where it had sat in 1839, to the reverse below the eagle. Doug Winter classifies the variety as Winter 4-C, and most specimens carry a die crack running from the rim through the right diagonal of the V in FIVE, across the mintmark, and up onto the shield.
Attribution turns on the size of the D punch. Place a Small D example next to a Tall D and the letter is shorter and more compact, with a tighter loop and a thinner stem. Authenticators also weigh the coin against the 8.359-gram standard, check the specific gravity near 17.16, and look for the diagnostic shield-area die crack, which is a strong tell for a genuine Small D. Most 1840-D survivors fall on narrow-mill planchets near 21.6 mm, the diameter that became standard later in 1840 once the 22.5 mm broad-mill stock from earlier in the year was used up. Buyers should also confirm the Dahlonega attribution and not confuse the southern D with the Denver mintmark used on later twentieth-century gold.
Doug Winter ranks the 1840-D the sixth-rarest Dahlonega half eagle overall, and the Small D punch is harder to find than the Tall D within that survivor pool. Most examples grade Very Fine through Extremely Fine, with About Uncirculated coins scarce and Mint State pieces extremely rare. Collectors building a date set will usually accept either punch, while die-variety specialists pay an added premium for confirmed Small D examples. Auction comps for branch-mint Liberty fives at this rarity level routinely move with the broader market for early Dahlonega gold, and certified examples in higher circulated grades draw the strongest interest. Background on the design and date run is in the Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
