About this coinHistory

The 1842-C Small Date is one of two date-logo varieties produced at Charlotte that year, and the scarcer of the pair by a wide margin. Roughly 4,595 pieces were struck under this die, against 23,589 for the companion Large Date. Survival estimates run 60 to 100 coins across all grades, with most landing in well-worn condition and only a tiny handful credibly called Mint State. Doug Winter and other Charlotte specialists have long ranked it the rarest half eagle from the branch, and one of the rarest Charlotte gold coins of any denomination. The Key designation reflects that standing.

Date-logo attribution is the single diagnostic that matters, since the Large Date shares the same year, mintmark, and design. On the Small Date, the numerals are notably more compact and the 2 sits centered in the field between the bust truncation and the denticles, while the Large Date carries taller, more widely spaced figures that crowd the rim. About three-quarters of known Small Date survivors also show a rim cud at the 12 o'clock position, the marker for Die State II. Beyond the date logo, confirm the C mintmark is sharp and original on the reverse below the eagle, and check that weight falls near the 8.359 gram standard for the No Motto type, which is a useful screen against altered or cast forgeries.

Most coins offered at auction grade between Very Fine and About Uncirculated, and even worn examples carry strong premiums when the surfaces are honest and original. Cleaning, smoothing, and added marks are common on this date, so collectors lean heavily on PCGS or NGC certification, and CAC approval adds another layer of confidence. Recent auction appearances of higher-grade pieces are infrequent, and a fresh AU example often draws competitive bidding from Charlotte specialists. For collectors building a branch-mint half eagle set or a No Motto type run with a marquee rarity, the 1842-C Small Date is usually the centerpiece. Background on the broader design is in the Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
