About this coinHistory

The 1842 Philadelphia half eagle splits into two reverse varieties, separated by a working-die change that swapped one set of letter punches for another. The Large Letters reverse uses tall, heavy characters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D., where the bases nearly touch and the tops crowd toward the rim. The Small Letters reverse uses shorter, blockier punches roughly as wide as they are tall. Both pairings drew from a combined 1842 Philadelphia mintage of 27,578 coins, and the Large Letters share is the smaller of the two by surviving population. Specialist counts run in the area of 50 to 60 examples across all grades.

Attribution rests on the reverse legend. Set the coin face down and look at FIVE D.: Large Letters punches stand visibly taller and sit closer to the denticles, with the bases of adjacent letters nearly meeting. Small Letters reads more compact and even, with clear gaps between characters. Weight should fall within tolerance of the 8.359 gram standard for the No Motto type, and the diameter holds at 21.6 mm. Coronet half eagles of this period saw heavy circulation in commerce, so most survivors land in Very Fine through About Uncirculated, and rim adjustments or cleaned surfaces are common enough that original skin earns a meaningful premium.

For the variety collector, the Large Letters reverse is the harder of the 1842 Philadelphia pair to locate. Auction appearances run at roughly half the frequency of the Small Letters reverse, and pleasing About Uncirculated coins price in the mid four to low five figures when they surface. A PCGS EF40 with CAC approval handled by Douglas Winter Numismatics is representative of the bracket where most quality examples trade. The variety remains a defensible target inside a date-and-mintmark Coronet set, and pairing both reverse styles is the standard approach for collectors building the early Liberty Head series. Mint State examples are genuinely rare and seldom offered, so most working sets settle for a clean About Uncirculated coin with original color. Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
