The 1843-D Small D half eagle is the scarcer of two mintmark punches Dahlonega used that year. Combined production reached 98,452 coins, but the Small D punch (cataloged by Doug Winter as variety 10-F) was retired early in the run, leaving the Medium D (variety 11-G) to handle the bulk of the year's output. Doug Winter estimates 225 to 250 examples survive across both varieties combined, with the Small D representing a clear minority of that pool. The 1843 production year stands out as one of the strongest for the southern branch mint, which is why circulated survivors of the date overall are easier to locate than other Dahlonega years.
Variety attribution rests on the mintmark punch itself. The Small D is squat and blunt: a thick upright with short, straight serifs and proportions that look compressed against the V in FIVE compared to the taller, more open Medium D. The same Small D punch was also used on a few 1840 and most 1841 half eagles, which gives collectors a reference set for direct visual comparison. A second confirmation lives on the obverse, where the Medium D variety shows a small line of die lumps between the first and second stars that the Small D does not. Weight should sit at 8.359 grams in 90% gold, and any deviation from those specifications, or a punch that splits the difference between the two known sizes, deserves third-party authentication before purchase.
Most Small D examples that reach the market grade Fine through Extremely Fine. Coins in the lower About Uncirculated range are obtainable with patience, choice AU is genuinely difficult, and Mint State pieces are rare enough that any appearance draws attention from Dahlonega specialists. Buyers building a date set can usually settle for the Medium D, which means Small D demand concentrates among collectors specifically pursuing the variety, a thinner but committed audience that supports premiums when sharp examples surface.
