About this coinHistory

The 1846-D D Over D Repunched Mintmark is a die variety from the Dahlonega Mint. In this era every mintmark was added by hand, with a small steel punch struck into the working die by hammer. When the first blow landed off-position, the punch was struck again to correct placement. The hardened die kept traces of the original impression, leaving a doubled D on every coin from that die. On the 1846-D D Over D the doubling is dramatic enough to see without magnification on sharply struck examples, which has long made it one of the best known repunched mintmarks in the Liberty Head half eagle series. Total 1846-D production reached 80,294 pieces across all die marriages, and the RPM variety is a subset of that output.

Authentication starts with confirming basic Coronet specifications: 8.359 grams, 21.6 mm, on a 90 percent gold planchet with a reeded edge. Variety attribution then comes down to the mintmark area on the reverse, just below the eagle. Doug Winter catalogs two die marriages that show this repunching, Winter 17-J and Winter 18-J, with the errant first D positioned slightly higher and farther right than the final D. A jeweler's loupe at 5x is enough to confirm the doubling on a clean example, though heavy wear can erase the diagnostic. Counterfeit risk applies to every Dahlonega half eagle, with cast and added-mintmark fakes a documented hazard, so weight verification matters as much as the RPM itself. Certified examples from PCGS or NGC remove the attribution question and protect the variety premium.

Surviving population is estimated at roughly 125 coins across all grades, dramatically smaller than the broader 1846-D date population. In AU grades only 16 to 18 pieces are believed to exist, and Mint State examples sit in the 8 to 10 range. The variety draws Dahlonega specialists and die-marriage collectors who pursue Winter's full reference set, and Heritage has handled AU and Mint State examples at meaningful premiums above the standard 1846-D. This is a recognized variety with real scarcity behind the label, but it remains a die variety rather than a separate date, so plan to pay the premium for certified attribution and a clean mintmark.
