The Dahlonega Mint coined 43,984 half eagles in 1850, a slight rebound from the 1849 low near 39,000 and a step back into the 40,000-piece band held in 1848. The figure sits well below the 1847-D at 64,405 and the 1851-D at 62,710, marking 1850 as a soft year in the middle of the Dahlonega series. The California Gold Rush was the operating backdrop. Two years on from Sutter's Mill, the migration west was in full swing, and the north Georgia districts that fed Dahlonega were losing miners and capital to the new Sierra fields. The branch still drew on Appalachian placer washings and quartz veins, but supply was thinning and the labor bench was shrinking through the year.
Specifications follow series standard: 8.359 grams, 21.6 millimeters, 90 percent gold with copper alloy, reeded edge, and the D mintmark below the eagle on the reverse. Authentication starts at the scale, since meaningful drift from 8.359 g is a fast first cut against added-D fakes built on common 1850 Philadelphia host coins. Examine the mintmark under magnification for tooling marks, a join line in the field, or a punch profile that does not match confirmed Dahlonega D dies. Strike weakness on Liberty's hair curls, the upper obverse stars, and the eagle's neck feathers is normal Dahlonega production rather than wear. The alloy color tends toward a warm yellow-olive that flattens to a dusty cast in worn examples; bright-yellow surfaces with crisp central detail on a purported 1850-D should raise questions.
Doug Winter places the 1850-D in the middle tier of Dahlonega half eagles, not among his core appearance keys of 1842-D Small Date, 1842-D Large Date, 1854-D, 1856-D, 1860-D, and 1861-D. Circulated examples in Very Fine and Extremely Fine surface a few times a year through Heritage and Stack's Bowers, often from Fairmont and estate consignments. About Uncirculated coins are scarcer but locatable for patient buyers. Mint State is the sharp edge of the rarity story, with only a small handful of confidently Uncirculated examples documented across PCGS and NGC, most concentrated at MS61 and MS62. A PCGS AU58 brought roughly $7,500 through Heritage in late 2023, a fair anchor for high-end About Uncirculated. For background, see the Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
