About this coinHistory

The 1855-C half eagle was struck at the Charlotte Mint to a reported mintage of 39,788 pieces, almost identical to the 1854-C at 39,283 and continuing the lower-output pattern that defined the middle years of the decade. Charlotte had opened in 1838 to coin gold dug from the surrounding North Carolina placer fields, and by 1855 the branch was producing routine quantities of $1, $2.50, and $5 pieces for regional commerce. The 1855-C sits between the deeper 1850s production years and the genuinely tiny Charlotte issues to come, paired with the 1854-C as the only sub-40,000 half eagles of the decade. Doug Winter, the recognized Charlotte specialist, treats 1855-C as one of the harder dates of the 1850s because mintage alone understates how few pieces survived heavy regional use.

Authentication begins with the published specifications: 8.359 grams, 21.6 mm diameter, 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper, reeded edge, and the C mintmark on the reverse below the eagle. Charlotte half eagles draw counterfeit attention because small surviving populations make a single fake valuable, so a calibrated scale, caliper, and specific-gravity reading near 17.2 are baseline checks on any raw example. Strike weakness is the second diagnostic. Genuine 1855-C half eagles routinely show softness on the curls below IBER in LIBERTY paired with matching weakness on the eagle's upper leg and the bases of several arrow feathers, while obverse stars and peripheral lettering remain reasonably sharp. The C mintmark itself is sometimes lightly impressed, and pieces with a sharply defined C earn meaningful premiums.

In today's market the 1855-C is a connoisseur's Charlotte issue. PCGS estimates roughly 350 to 400 survivors across all grades, with only a small handful in Mint State and finest-known examples concentrated at the MS62 to MS63 level. Most appearances grade Very Fine to lower About Uncirculated, and properly original AU55 or finer pieces are scarce enough to draw competitive bidding when they surface. Heritage results show five-figure prices for high-end About Uncirculated coins and mid-five figures for rare Uncirculated examples. For collectors building a Charlotte type set or a Liberty Head half eagle date run, the 1855-C is exactly the kind of coin Doug Winter has long argued is undervalued relative to its true rarity.
