About this coinHistory

The 1856-C Liberty Head half eagle came out of the Charlotte Mint during a year when the North Carolina facility was still working through chronic die problems and skilled-labor shortages that had plagued operations since 1838. Coiner Conrad Wilbanks pressed 28,457 examples, and that number is the story. It sits well below the 1854-C mintage of 39,283 and the 1855-C mintage of 39,788, dropping the 1856-C into the lower tier of late-1850s Charlotte production. Charlotte specialist Doug Winter ranks it among the scarcer issues of the decade, grouping it with the 1854-C as one of the harder dates to locate in any grade. Bullion arrived from regional placer operations and the press struggled against worn working dies. The mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle.

Authentication starts with weight and metal: a genuine 1856-C should hit 8.359 grams on a calibrated scale and measure 21.6 mm across, struck in 0.900 fine gold with a reeded edge. Counterfeits of Charlotte gold are a known hazard, and the most common scheme is an added C mintmark on a Philadelphia coin. Examine the area below the eagle under magnification: the mintmark should sit cleanly against the field with no tooling marks, no raised ridges from solder, and no break in the surrounding luster. Strike weakness is normal Charlotte behavior and is itself a diagnostic. Look for softness on the eagle's leg feathers, the upper shield lines, and the highest curls of Liberty's hair. A coin that looks crisply struck across all those zones deserves scrutiny rather than confidence.

Doug Winter treats the 1856-C as a genuine appearance-rarity Key alongside the 1854-C, with circulated examples landing most often in the VF to EF range. About Uncirculated coins are scarce, and Mint State survivors are rare in any meaningful sense, with the population concentrated at MS60-MS62 and almost nothing above. Auction results reflect that scarcity: EF45 examples typically realize in the mid four figures, AU58 coins push into the low five-figure range, and Mint State pieces can move into solid five figures depending on color and surface quality. For Charlotte specialists this is a date to buy when offered rather than wait on, since the supply does not refresh quickly. Read more in our Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
