About this coinHistory

The 1859-C Liberty Head Half Eagle came out of the Charlotte Mint in a year when the southern branch was already running on borrowed time. Charlotte struck 31,847 half eagles in 1859, a figure that sits between the 31,360 pieces dated 1857-C and the 38,856 dated 1858-C, placing the issue squarely in the middle of the late-1850s Charlotte sequence. The same year produced only about 5,235 Charlotte gold dollars and roughly 2,244 Charlotte quarter eagles, which made the half eagle the workhorse Charlotte denomination that year. By this point Charlotte's coining operations were winding toward a quiet finish: 1860 would be its last full year of production, a tiny 1861-C emission would follow, and the facility would then be seized at the outbreak of the Civil War and never resume federal coinage.

Authentication starts with the standard specifications: 8.359 grams, 21.6 millimeters, 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper, with a reeded edge. The mintmark "C" sits on the reverse below the eagle. Two diagnostics matter here. First, the 1859-C is known for a weak, fuzzy reverse, and Doug Winter notes that even AU and Mint State examples can give the visual impression of wear because the strike never fully brought up reverse detail. Grading by sharpness alone will mislead you. Second, surfaces frequently show areas of die rust, and many genuine pieces carry deep marks in the fields. Counterfeit-C concerns apply across the Charlotte half eagle series, so confirming the coin tracks to 8.359 grams within tolerance, alongside checking that the mintmark style and placement match known Charlotte working dies, is the right baseline.

For collectors, the 1859-C is reasonably available in circulated grades from Fine through About Uncirculated, where the 31,847 mintage supports a workable supply. Doug Winter rates it scarce overall and considerably rarer in the higher Mint State range, with true Uncirculated examples genuinely uncommon. Pricing reflects that split: well-circulated pieces carry meaningful Charlotte-issue premiums but remain attainable, while AU58 and Mint State coins jump sharply. Because the strike is what it is, holders should temper expectations on luster and detail and value originality of surface instead. This issue typically appeals to date collectors building a Charlotte half eagle set rather than condition specialists. Read the Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
