About this coinHistory

The 1890-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle marked the return of gold coinage to the Carson City Mint after a four-year shutdown. The facility had closed in 1886, reopened in 1889 to handle silver coinage under the Bland-Allison Act, and finally resumed half eagle production in 1890 with a delivery of 53,800 pieces. That figure stood as Carson City's second-largest half eagle mintage of the entire Type 2 With Motto run, trailing only the 82,817-coin 1882-CC. The strong output reflected a deliberate effort by mint officials to maximize gold production during the facility's twilight years, before the eventual closure of the Carson City branch in 1893. Strikes from these dies tend to be soft on the eagle's neck feathers and on the high points of Liberty's hair, a hallmark of the worn working dies that Carson City pressed into extended service.

Authentication centers on confirming a genuine Carson City product rather than an altered Philadelphia coin with an added mintmark. The CC punch on the 1890-CC sits below the eagle, slightly tilted, with both letters showing the heavy, slightly squared serifs typical of the era's working punch. Examine the field around the mintmark under magnification at 10x: a genuine punch shows fine flow lines radiating into the surrounding field, while an added mintmark will sit on top of the field with disturbed metal or tooling marks at its base. Weight should fall at 8.359 grams with a 21.6 mm diameter. Reeded edge counts and proper 90 percent gold color also rule out the cast counterfeits that have surfaced in this series.

Doug Winter rates the 1890-CC as one of the more obtainable Carson City half eagles in worn grades, with Very Fine through Extremely Fine examples appearing regularly at major auctions. About Uncirculated coins are noticeably scarcer, and Mint State pieces are genuinely rare, with most certified examples concentrated at MS-60 through MS-62. Survival estimates suggest perhaps 1,500 to 2,000 coins exist across all grades, a small fraction of the original mintage. Eye appeal varies widely; collectors should prioritize coins with original surfaces and minimal abrasions over technically higher grades that have been cleaned. The combination of generous mintage, true CC mintmark, and accessible price points in circulated grades makes this a foundational piece for any Carson City gold collection. For broader context on the type, see the Liberty Head Half Eagle series history.
