About this coinHistory

The 1844-C quarter eagle is a true key date of the Charlotte branch operation, with a recorded mintage of 11,622 pieces and a survival profile that places intact examples among the most elusive issues in the entire Coronet series. Charlotte struck gold from local Appalachian deposits in a building that had only been operational for six years when this date was produced, and the facility's tooling was perpetually stretched thin. Die quality for the year shows the strain, with crude lapping marks visible on most genuine survivors and a recurring weakness through the upper portion of the eagle's shield on the reverse. The C mintmark sits below the eagle on the reverse, positioned just above the fraction line, and was punched into working dies by hand at Philadelphia before the dies shipped south. This hand placement produces small but consistent positional differences from die to die that authenticators have catalogued in detail.

Authentication centers on that C mintmark. Genuine 1844-C mintmarks show a distinctive serifed C with a slight tilt to the right and well-defined upper and lower terminals. Counterfeit operators have repeatedly attempted to add C mintmarks to common Philadelphia 1844 strikings, and the giveaway is almost always the mintmark itself. Added mintmarks typically show flat tops where a genuine punch impression should be domed, sometimes display tooling marks in the field around the C, and frequently sit in incorrect positions relative to the surrounding devices. A genuine 1844-C also weighs 4.18 grams on a 90-percent gold alloy with specific gravity near 17.2, and the reeded edge should match Charlotte branch tooling consistent with other dates from the period. Strike quality across the date is uniformly soft on the central obverse hair detail, a die issue rather than wear.

Survivors total perhaps 100 to 150 examples in all grades according to standard branch-mint census work, with the bulk falling in VF and lower EF. About Uncirculated coins are major rarities and Mint State examples can be counted on one hand, with PCGS Population Reports showing only a handful certified in MS condition across all submission years. Auction results for problem-free AU pieces routinely cross five figures, and the rare certified MS coin is a major-event purchase. See the full Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series history.
