About this coinHistory

The 1848-D quarter eagle came out of Dahlonega at a recorded mintage of 13,771 pieces, a figure in the middle of the branch's mid-decade output that did nothing to soften its eventual rarity. By 1848 the Dahlonega facility had settled into a workable rhythm with its Coronet dies, yet the Georgia gold supply remained modest and seasonally uneven. The local economy of the southern Piedmont absorbed nearly the entire production into circulation, and pieces moved hand to hand through the cotton trade and inland banks until heavy wear had erased much of the original detail. Coronet quarter eagles from Dahlonega rarely reached eastern collector hands in any meaningful numbers before the Civil War. Doug Winter places survival in the 110 to 150 range in all grades, with the bulk falling in lower circulated condition and Choice About Uncirculated coins scarce enough to be event purchases when they appear at auction.

Authentication leads with the D mintmark itself, set below the eagle on the reverse and punched into the working die at Philadelphia before shipment south. A genuine 1848-D mintmark sits in a documented position relative to the arrow feathers and the fraction line, and the punch produces metal flow that thins gradually into the surrounding field with no perimeter tooling. The standard counterfeit attack is an added D cut or soldered onto a Philadelphia 1848 host, which carries 7,497 pieces of recorded mintage and is itself uncommon. Tells include flat punch tops where a struck impression should crown, faint cut lines along the letter edges, and incorrect spacing between the mintmark and the surrounding devices. Weight should sit at 4.18 grams in 0.900 fine gold with specific gravity near 17.2, and a coin alignment with reeded edge consistent with other Dahlonega Coronet output of the period. Strike weakness on Liberty's curl above the ear is common to the date and is a die characteristic, not evidence of polishing or repair.

Specialist demand for Dahlonega quarter eagles has supported steady price appreciation on certified problem-free 1848-D coins across the past two decades. The issue holds a firm Key Date position in the branch's run, sought after by date collectors and Dahlonega specialists alike. See the full Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series history.
