About this coinHistory

Charlotte's 1852 quarter eagle delivery totaled just 9,772 pieces, an exceptionally thin output that places the issue among the lower-mintage Charlotte production years. The Charlotte branch had been processing North Carolina and Georgia mountain gold since 1838, and by the early 1850s the region's most accessible deposits were thinning. Local miners had moved to deeper lode operations that yielded ore at a slower pace than the original placer workings. The coiners pressed what bullion arrived, and the 1852 figure reflects that diminished regional supply. Most examples saw immediate active circulation through Carolina and Georgia commercial channels.

The C mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle's tail feathers and provides the primary authentication target. Genuine Charlotte mintmarks show the slightly stocky rounded character produced by the southern branch punches, distinct in profile from the sharper Philadelphia and New Orleans letter forms. Examination under 5x to 10x magnification should confirm the mintmark is part of the original strike, with metal flowing naturally into the relief and no halo or disturbed surface texture surrounding the letter. Counterfeiters working from common Philadelphia hosts produce mintmarks that look too thin or sit at the wrong angle relative to the eagle's tail. Standard verification at 4.18 grams and 18 millimeters filters out the more obvious fabrications.

Survival is the defining issue. Probably 80 to 130 examples exist across all grades, with the bulk concentrated in Very Fine through Extremely Fine condition reflecting the heavy commercial use these coins endured. About Uncirculated pieces are scarce, Mint State examples are genuinely rare, and Gem-grade specimens reside in long-held collections that surface only at major estate sales. Strike quality on the 1852-C tends toward softness in Liberty's hair behind the ear and in the eagle's wing tips, characteristic of Charlotte die preparation rather than circulation wear. The combination of low mintage, branch-mint provenance, and persistent collector demand for southern gold makes this issue a Key Date with deep specialist appeal. Original orange-gold patina matters enormously, since cleaned pieces lose the wholesome surface character that distinguishes properly preserved Charlotte coinage.
