About this coinHistory

Charlotte struck just 3,677 quarter eagles dated 1855, one of the lowest figures in the long Charlotte Quarter Eagle series and a clear marker of the regional gold contraction underway across the Carolina Piedmont. The branch facility had been built in the late 1830s to capture the surface placer output of the southern gold belt, but by the mid-1850s the easy diggings around Reed, Russell, and Mecklenburg County were largely worked out, and lode operations had not yet matured to refill the bullion pipeline. Charlotte's 1855 deliveries were spread across a small number of die marriages, with the obverse and reverse pairings showing the heavy lapping and clash repair characteristic of a facility stretching limited dies across thin metal supply. The issue sits in the same depleted-supply context as the 1855-D, the 1856-C, and the run of late-1850s southern gold that closed out the antebellum era at both branches.

Authentication for the 1855-C centers on verification of the C mintmark, struck on the reverse below the eagle in the standard Charlotte position. The 1855-C C punch is small and slightly tilted, with thin serifs and a characteristic die-flow signature radiating into the surrounding field that genuine examples consistently display. Added-mintmark counterfeits built on common-date Philadelphia 1855 hosts are the principal risk category, and detection requires examination of the area immediately around the punch for tooling marks, evidence of solder transfer, or a sharp boundary where a genuine struck mintmark would show metal flow. The planchet must weigh 4.18 grams at 0.900 fineness and gauge 18 millimeters with a complete reeded edge, and the obverse and reverse should align in the standard coin orientation. Charlotte strikes from this period typically show central weakness on Liberty's hair and the eagle's neck feathers.

Survivors are estimated in the 80 to 130 range across all grades, with Very Fine through Extremely Fine the typical band and About Uncirculated coins quite scarce. Mint State examples are rare and the population reports show only a handful certified above MS-60. Problem-free circulated coins with original surfaces and even color trade at firm premiums to wholesale guides, and certified higher-grade pieces are the kind of purchase Charlotte specialists wait years to make.
