About this coinHistory

Later deliveries of the 1907 Low Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle carried a reduced E PLURIBUS UNUM inscription on the edge, with smaller characters than the earlier Large Letters issue. The Small Letters format became the long-running standard for the Saint-Gaudens series edge inscription, carrying through the remaining 1907 production and continuing on all subsequent years through 1933. A small number of 1907 Small Letters pieces show proof-striking characteristics and have been attributed as proof or specimen strikings by PCGS and NGC. As with the Large Letters proof attributions, these designations are specialist calls applied on individual-coin review rather than reflecting a formal Mint proof program; the Matte Proof program for the series began with the 1908 Motto issue in the following calendar year. Design specifications are otherwise identical to the Large Letters issue: low-relief striding Liberty, eagle-and-sun reverse, Arabic-numeral date, 46 obverse stars.

Attribution of a 1907 Small Letters proof depends on both edge verification and surface analysis. The Small Letters edge shows visibly narrower E PLURIBUS UNUM characters across the inscription, with smaller stars between words; measurement of individual letter height is one of the diagnostic tools specialist authenticators apply. Proof surface attribution rests on the same criteria as the Large Letters variant: strike sharpness, die state, planchet preparation, and surface texture differences from ordinary circulation strikes. PCGS and NGC apply their own standards for 1907 LR proof designation, and the two services have not always reached the same conclusion on individual coins. Each known example carries pedigree documentation, and market appearances are individually reported in the specialist numismatic press. Counterfeit risk is low given the specialist authentication infrastructure, but misattribution between proof and business strike carries the greatest exposure for uncredentialed collectors.

Market position for the 1907 Small Letters proof parallels the Large Letters proof as specialist territory with transactions infrequent and pricing sensitive to grading service, grade, and pedigree. Collector demand includes the same three constituencies (Saint-Gaudens proof specialists, edge-variety completists, and Type I proof collectors), with Small Letters examples sometimes preferred for the historical continuity they share with the 1908-1933 main edge format. Acquisition is certified only, with PCGS or NGC designation and pedigree documentation both functionally required. Pricing reflects the proof premium over the circulation-strike 1907 Low Relief Small Letters, which was itself the majority of the 1907 Low Relief production and is therefore the more common of the two circulation-strike varieties. For the broader context of the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Low Relief edge-letters varieties and the pre-Matte-Proof-program specimen strikings, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
