About this coinHistory

Denver's first Saint-Gaudens double eagle production went forward in early 1908 with the No Motto design, in the months before Congress ordered IN GOD WE TRUST restored to gold coinage in May of that year. Production ran to 663,750 pieces, a figure roughly double the branch mint's subsequent 1908-D Motto output and reflective of normal pre-transition throughput rather than any anticipation of the coming design change. The design is Saint-Gaudens' original low-relief work: Arabic-numeral date, striding Liberty obverse, eagle-in-flight reverse without the motto, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge. The D mint mark sits above the date on the obverse, to the right of the final digit. Because Denver had not struck the earlier High Relief coins, the 1908-D No Motto is also the only mottoless Saint-Gaudens double eagle produced at the D mint, giving it a distinct type-set relevance for collectors building a full mint-specific design run.

Strike quality on 1908-D No Motto varies with die pair and position in the die cycle. Early-state examples show crisp detail across the torch flame, Liberty's skirt drapery, and the eagle's breast feathers; late-state examples show softness in those same areas and on the sun's rays behind the eagle. The No Motto reverse is uncluttered in the open field where the motto would later appear, which makes this coin particularly useful for study of the original Saint-Gaudens reverse composition. Typical wear follows the series pattern: Liberty's forward knee, breast, and the eagle's breast and leading wing are the first high points to show friction. Surface marks from bag handling are common on obverse fields, and dealers price accordingly at the MS63-MS64 level where field preservation is the grading swing factor. PCGS or NGC certification is the standard approach given the counterfeit environment and the need for accurate No Motto / Motto attribution on branch mint issues.

Collector demand for the 1908-D No Motto runs along two tracks. Type-set builders who pursue both No Motto and Motto D-mint examples for a complete Saint-Gaudens Denver type run treat this coin as essential, while generalists building a full date-and-mint set take it as a standard acquisition. The 663,750 mintage supports routine availability through MS64, with enough Mint State coins in circulation that pricing at common grade tracks gold content plus a moderate numismatic premium. MS65 and above is where registry-set competition shows up, and finest-known examples at MS66 and higher trade at substantial premiums over common-grade pricing. Buying practice is certified only, both for counterfeit protection and for unambiguous No Motto attribution, which can be misread on worn coins where only the general reverse layout is visible. For the broader context of the 1908 motto transition at all three mints and how the 1908-D issues fit into the series, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
