About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 2,658,000 double eagles of 1922 represent the largest single-mint output of the year and one of the higher branch-mint runs of the Saint-Gaudens series. The large mintage tells only half the story. The 1922-S sits in semi-key territory because the 1933 gold recall melted the vast majority of the production, leaving a surviving population estimated in the tens of thousands and concentrated heavily in circulated and lower Mint State grades. Unlike the 1909-S or 1910-S, which were heavily represented in European bank hoard repatriations, the 1922-S did not enter those overseas reserves in significant quantities, which is the principal reason its survival profile is thinner than the mintage would suggest. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from other mid-series Motto issues: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge.

Strike quality on 1922-S is typical for San Francisco Motto-era production: adequate to sharp central detail on Liberty and the eagle, clean star definition, and well-struck rims. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population runs heavily through VF and AU, with Mint State examples less frequently encountered than for common European-hoard dates. MS63 and MS64 examples are available but trade at premiums above common-date pricing, and MS65 represents a real condition break where populations thin sharply. MS66 and finer are genuine condition rarities for the issue despite the large original mintage. Counterfeit exposure tracks semi-key levels given the pricing structure; PCGS or NGC certification is standard practice, and CAC approval adds meaningful value at MS64 and higher.

Market position for 1922-S sits in the semi-key tier of the Saint-Gaudens series, a meaningful step above common-date pricing but below the true melt-rarity keys like the 1920-S and 1927-D. Pricing structure reflects this: VF through AU examples trade in the mid three to low four figures, MS60 clears into the high three to low four figures, and MS63 pricing crosses into mid four-figure territory. MS64 and MS65 examples command meaningful premiums over common-grade Saint-Gaudens pricing in equivalent grades. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1922-S is a required acquisition, typically handled at MS63 or MS64 where availability and pricing are best aligned. Acquisition is certified only, given the counterfeit risk and the pricing sensitivity to grade distinctions. For the broader context of the 1933 melt's effect on high-mintage issues and why some survived in European hoards while others didn't, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
