About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 1927 double eagle production of 3,107,000 pieces was the second-largest S-mint Saint-Gaudens mintage of the series, trailing only the 1925-S. Like the 1927-D, however, the 1927-S was largely held in federal gold reserves rather than circulating, and the 1933 recall consumed most of the production. Surviving population is estimated at 1,500 to 2,500 coins across all grades, considerably smaller than the surviving populations of the similarly-sized 1924-S, 1925-S, or 1926-S, and the pricing structure reflects that hierarchy clearly. European hoard returns for 1927-S were limited compared to the other mid-1920s S-mints. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from the 1926-S issue: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge.

Strike quality on 1927-S is typical for San Francisco Motto-era production: generally good central detail on Liberty and the eagle, with clean star definition on early-state examples and some softness on later die-state strikes. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution of the small surviving population is weighted toward AU and lower Mint State grades. MS63 and MS64 examples are scarce; MS65 is genuinely rare; and MS66 and higher are extreme condition rarities that rarely appear at auction. The pricing jump from MS63 to MS64 and again from MS64 to MS65 is among the sharpest in the series for a coin not classified as a true key. Counterfeit exposure is material given the high pricing; PCGS or NGC certification is absolutely required, and CAC approval carries meaningful value at every Mint State grade tier.

Market position for 1927-S places it at the top of the semi-key tier, with pricing that approaches key-date territory at higher grades. VF pricing runs in the low five figures, AU examples clear into the mid five figures, MS60-MS62 pricing crosses into high five figures, and MS63 pricing routinely reaches $48,000-$51,000. MS64 and MS65 examples clear into six-figure territory when they appear at public sale, and MS66 examples have commanded premium multi-hundred-thousand-dollar pricing in recent markets. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1927-S is one of the most expensive required acquisitions in the series outside the true keys, and practical set completion often handles the date at VF or EF to preserve premium budget for the 1927-D. Acquisition is certified only at any grade. For the broader context of the 1927-year mintage-versus-survival divergence and the 1920s branch-mint melt pattern, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
