About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 1930 double eagle production of 74,000 pieces made the branch mint the sole producer of Saint-Gaudens double eagles that year. Neither Philadelphia nor Denver struck the denomination in 1930, and the Treasury's reduced gold coin requirements had collapsed the series' production volume from the 1928 peak of 8.8 million to this single modest S-mint run. The mintage itself is among the five lowest in the Saint-Gaudens series, and the 1933 recall consumed most of what was struck. Surviving population is estimated at 50 to 100 coins across all grades, making the 1930-S one of the scarcer late-date key issues in collector hands. The S mint mark sits above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from prior S-mint Motto-era issues.

Strike quality on surviving 1930-S examples is typical for San Francisco Motto-era production, with adequate to good central detail on Liberty and the eagle. Because of the tiny surviving population, many known examples are individually documented in specialist references; die diagnostic attribution is possible for most pieces in Mint State grades. Wear on circulated survivors follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast feathers first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population is weighted toward AU and low Mint State grades, with MS63 and higher examples making specialist events when offered. MS65 and above are extreme condition rarities; the PCGS and NGC populations at MS65+ combined number in the single digits. Counterfeit exposure is material at this price level; PCGS or NGC certification is absolutely required, and CAC approval adds meaningful value at every grade tier.

Market position for 1930-S is that of a major key date in the Saint-Gaudens series, ranking alongside the 1920-S, 1921, and 1927-D as the series' most valuable dates outside the 1933. Pricing begins in the high four figures for the lowest circulated grades and climbs sharply through each tier: VF pricing runs in the high four to low five figures, AU examples clear $35,000, MS60 examples reach into the mid to high five figures, and MS63 pricing crosses into six-figure territory. MS64 and MS65 examples are specialist acquisitions with pricing commonly in the high six-figure range. Collector demand comes from top-tier Saint-Gaudens specialists and registry-set participants for whom 1930-S is a non-substitutable requirement. Acquisition is certified only at any grade, with CAC approval a significant value factor. For the broader context of the late-date Saint-Gaudens key dates and the role of the 1933 recall in defining modern rarity, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
