About this coinHistory

Denver's 1931 double eagle production of 106,500 pieces was the branch mint's final Saint-Gaudens output of the series. Neither 1932 nor 1933 saw Denver participation in the denomination; the 1931-D closes an intermittent 24-year Denver run that began with the 1908-D No Motto. The mintage ranks as the seventh-lowest figure in the entire Saint-Gaudens series and makes 1931-D the second-lowest D-mint mintage of the run, trailing only the 1909-D at 52,500 pieces. Like the 1931 Philadelphia, the 1931-D production was held in Treasury and federal reserves rather than distributed to commerce or overseas banks, and the 1933 recall consumed most of what was struck. Surviving population is estimated at 50 to 100 coins across all grades, placing the 1931-D solidly among the major late-date Saint-Gaudens key issues. The D mint mark sits above the date on the obverse.

Strike quality on surviving 1931-D examples is typical Denver Motto-era work: adequate to good central detail on Liberty and the eagle, with some coins showing softness in the torch flame or the lower-arc stars of the 48-star obverse. Wear on circulated survivors follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population is weighted toward AU and low Mint State grades; MS63 and higher examples are specialist acquisitions that rarely appear outside major auctions. MS65 and above are extreme condition rarities, with PCGS and NGC populations combined numbering only in the single digits at MS65+. Counterfeit exposure is material at this price level; PCGS or NGC certification is absolutely required, and CAC approval carries meaningful value at every Mint State grade tier.

Market position for 1931-D is that of a major key date in the Saint-Gaudens series, trading with pricing structure comparable to the 1930-S and similarly positioned alongside the series' premium-tier regular-issue dates. VF pricing runs in the low to mid five figures, AU examples clear $21,000-$25,000, MS60 examples reach the mid five figures, and MS63 pricing commonly reaches $85,000-$90,000. MS64 and above are specialist acquisitions that clear well into six-figure territory. Collector demand comes exclusively from top-tier Saint-Gaudens specialists and registry-set participants; for the 1931-D, the "last Denver Saint-Gaudens" status adds a closing-bookend collector angle to what would otherwise be a scarcity-driven key date. Acquisition is certified only at any grade, with CAC approval a significant value factor.
