The 1842 Original proof half cent is another entry in the unbroken sequence of proof-only half cents that runs from 1840 through 1848. No circulation strikes were produced. The Mint continued to make a small number of proofs each year for collector sales, maintaining the denomination in name while effectively suspending it for commercial purposes.
Production estimates for the 1842 Original are consistent with the other proof-only years: likely fewer than fifty coins, possibly fewer than thirty. The exact figure was not recorded. What survives suggests a tiny production made for a small audience, each coin individually struck with the care that proof manufacture demanded.
Gobrecht's Braided Hair design, now in its third year on the half cent, is fully refined. The 1842 dies show clean, confident engraving without the minor adjustments that sometimes appear in a design's first year of production. The portrait is well-centered, the lettering evenly spaced, and the overall presentation is what a collector in 1842 would have expected from a Mint proof: a coin that represented the best the institution could produce.
The 1842 Original is collected as part of the proof-only sequence and priced accordingly. Individual coins surface at major auctions every few years, and each appearance is noted by the specialist community. The coin is beyond the reach of most casual collectors but within the scope of serious half cent specialists building comprehensive sets.
