About this coinHistory

The 1846 Original proof half cent was struck during the final stretch of the nine-year proof-only period. Production continued unchanged from previous years: a small number of proofs for collector sales, no circulation strikes, the denomination existing purely as a numismatic product. The Mint showed no urgency to either resume mass production or formally discontinue the half cent. It simply kept making a few proofs each year and set them aside for buyers.

Estimated production is in the range of twenty to forty coins, and surviving examples are scarce. The 1846 does not stand out from other dates in the proof-only sequence in terms of rarity; all are rare, and the minor differences in population between adjacent dates are matters of single-digit coins.

The 1846 does carry some contextual interest as a coin of the Mexican-American War era. The United States was at war with Mexico throughout most of 1846, and the resulting territorial gains would eventually bring the gold discoveries of 1848-1849 and the massive westward expansion of the 1850s. None of that is visible on the half cent (the design is unchanged, the production is routine), but the date places the coin in a specific historical moment that gives it resonance beyond its numismatic characteristics.

A collector acquiring an 1846 Original proof half cent is purchasing one of perhaps thirty surviving examples of a coin that was made while American soldiers were crossing the Rio Grande. The coin itself says nothing about that war. Its existence, in the quiet confines of the Mint's proof production, is a contrast worth noting.
