About this coinHistory

The 1847 Restrike proof half cent was produced from surviving 1847 dies to supplement the original proof production. The restrike is distinguished from the original by die characteristics documented in specialist references and confirmed by grading service attribution.

Like other restrikes in the series, the 1847 Restrike offers a somewhat more accessible path to owning an 1847-dated half cent. "More accessible" still means a rare coin with a small surviving population, but the restrike is typically available more often and at a lower price than the corresponding original. For a collector building the proof-only date set, the restrike may be the practical choice for this date.

The 1847 Restrike carries the same legal-tender status and the same Mint provenance as the original. The copper is from Mint stock, the dies are Mint dies, the striking was done on Mint presses. The difference is timing: the restrike was made later than the date it bears. For some collectors, that difference is material. For others, it is a footnote to the coin's identity as a genuine half cent of the Braided Hair type.

Each collector draws their own line regarding restrikes, and the market accommodates every position. Originals-only purists, restrikes-acceptable pragmatists, and variety-complete maximalists all find what they need in the proof half cent market. The 1847 Restrike serves the middle and latter camps.
