About this coinHistory

The 1852 half cent exists only in proof form — no circulation strikes were produced. After the increased output of 1851, the Mint skipped circulation production in 1852, reverting temporarily to the proof-only pattern of the 1840s. The reason for the gap is not documented clearly, but copper supply fluctuations and shifting Mint priorities likely played a role.

The 1852 Original proof was struck in very small quantity, perhaps twenty to forty coins, for sale to the established collector base. The coin is a significant rarity, scarcer than the circulation-strike dates surrounding it and comparable in scarcity to the 1840s proof-only issues.

The "Original" designation separates this from the 1852 Restrike, which was produced later from surviving dies. The diagnostics for distinguishing the two have been documented by specialists and are applied by certification services. The Original is the more prized of the two, reflecting its priority of production and typically smaller surviving population.

The 1852 is one of the surprises in the late Braided Hair series. A collector working through the dates in sequence encounters circulation strikes in 1849, 1850, 1851, then — no circulation coins in 1852, only proofs. It is a disruption in the expected pattern, a reminder that half cent production was always subject to forces beyond the collector's control. The denomination existed at the Mint's convenience, not by right.
