About this coinHistory

The 1857 Restrike proof half cent is, in a sense, the very last half cent. Not in date (it bears the same 1857 as the original proofs and circulation strikes) but in order of production. The restrike was manufactured after the original 1857 proofs, using surviving 1857 dies to strike a final batch of coins for collector sale. When those dies were retired, no half cent would ever be struck again.

The Restrike is identified by die characteristics that distinguish it from the original 1857 proof. The die state, edge treatment, or reverse pairing may differ, and these diagnostics are documented in specialist references and confirmed by certification services. The attribution matters because the Original and Restrike occupy slightly different positions in the market hierarchy, with the Original typically commanding a premium.

Surviving 1857 Restrikes are rare. The total population is small enough that individual coins can often be traced through provenance records. Any example offered for sale should carry certification from a major grading service, both for authentication and for the attribution that determines whether the coin is an Original or a Restrike.

The 1857 Restrike is the postscript to the half cent denomination, the last coins physically made, even though they bear the same date as the final official issue. A collector who acquires one holds what may be the last half cent die ever to touch a copper planchet at the Philadelphia Mint. The dies were put away after this. There was nothing more to strike.
