About this coinHistory

The Small Date, Large 5C combination is the third of the four 1835 half dime varieties. The compact date numerals pair with the taller denomination marking on the reverse, creating a distinct die marriage that specialists recognize and collect. The contrast between the smaller date and larger 5C gives the coin a slightly different visual balance than the Large Date, Large 5C version.

Among 1835 half dime collectors, the Small Date, Large 5C is a necessary acquisition for a complete variety set. The combination reflects the Mint's practice of mixing and matching punches during die preparation, which in 1835 produced more variant combinations than any other year in the Capped Bust series. Four dates, two denomination sizes, two date sizes, and the resulting four varieties.

Surviving examples are available in circulated grades. Uncirculated coins are more difficult to find than for the more common variety combinations, and prices reflect the moderate scarcity. A well-struck example in Extremely Fine or better with original surfaces is a target worth paying a premium for.
