About this coinHistory

The 1836 proof half dime was struck during the year Christian Gobrecht began actively designing new silver coinage for the Philadelphia Mint. Proof production continued under the Capped Bust design even as Gobrecht worked on his Seated Liberty concept that would replace it the following year. The 1836 proof is one of the penultimate Capped Bust proof half dimes, with only the 1837 proof remaining before the design transition.

Surviving examples are rare but available through specialist channels. The 1836 proof combines the Capped Bust design's final maturity with the looming transition to Seated Liberty, giving it historical weight beyond its numismatic rarity. Collectors who build complete proof Capped Bust half dime sets include the 1836 as one of the closing entries in the series.
