The 1837 Capped Bust, Large 5C half dime is one of the last Capped Bust coins struck before the Seated Liberty design replaced the series. Production began in 1837 with the old design, but partway through the year, Christian Gobrecht's new Seated Liberty obverse was implemented, creating a split year with both Capped Bust and Seated Liberty coins dated 1837. The Capped Bust Large 5C represents the earlier production, before the design change.
As a final-year issue of a design that had been in use since 1829, the 1837 Capped Bust Large 5C carries terminal-date appeal. Collectors assembling a complete Capped Bust half dime set end here, and the coin serves as the bookend to the 1829 first-year issue. Both are common dates and both are affordable, but together they bracket the entire nine-year run of the series.
The Seated Liberty design that replaced Capped Bust represented a generational shift in American silver coinage. Gobrecht's Seated Liberty would remain on the half dime (and other silver denominations) for decades, and the 1837 transition is one of the most significant design changes in nineteenth-century American numismatics. The Capped Bust half dimes of 1837 are the last survivors of an earlier visual tradition, and for collectors who value design history, they represent the end of an era.
