About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 2,560,322 half dollars in 1900, continuing the branch mint's steady production into the new century. The Pacific Coast economy was thriving: the aftereffects of the Klondike Gold Rush continued to pump money through San Francisco's banks and businesses, and the city's port handled growing trade with the newly acquired Philippines and other Pacific territories. Silver coinage demand remained strong in the western states, where cash transactions dominated retail commerce.

The 2,560,322 mintage places the 1900-S among the more common San Francisco dates in the series. Survival rates are consistent with other well-struck San Francisco issues from the period. Good through Fine examples are readily available, and Very Fine coins with complete LIBERTY appear at regular intervals in the marketplace. The date carries no premium above standard series levels and represents one of the more accessible turn-of-the-century San Francisco Barber half dollars for collectors assembling date-and-mintmark sets. Extremely Fine pieces are less common but surface regularly enough at major auctions.
