The 1813 50C/UNI Capped Bust Half Dollar is one of the most striking and famous reverse varieties in the entire early half dollar series, the result of a dramatic die clash that left the letters UNI from UNITED visible directly beneath the 50 C. denomination on the reverse. The clash occurred when the obverse and reverse dies came together without a planchet between them, transferring an impression of the legend lettering into the reverse die, and subsequent strikes preserved that ghosted UNI in a position where it appears to read with the denomination itself. The variety is cataloged as Overton O-101 and O-101a in Al C. Overton's reference work, with the 101a representing a later die state where the clash features intensified.
The coin shares the lettered edge era specifications of 13.48 grams, 32.5 mm in diameter, and 89.24% silver content, with FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR impressed on the edge by Castaing machine before striking in a plain collar. Authentication centers on locating the UNI letters distinctly under the 50 C., where the U sits below the 5, the N below the 0, and the I below the C, all in proper alignment that confirms the die-clash origin rather than post-strike damage. Strike quality on these reverse dies tends to be normal for the period, with usual softness possible at Liberty's curls and the eagle's claws. Genuine examples show sharp lettered edge characters and the proper weight tolerance for the alloy and planchet dimensions.
The 50C/UNI is one of the few early American varieties that draws collectors from outside the dedicated Capped Bust specialty, since the visual drama of the ghosted lettering appeals broadly. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) certified populations remain limited at every grade level, and Heritage Auctions records show consistent strong demand.
