About this coinHistory

The 1814 E/A Capped Bust Half Dollar is a fascinating die-correction variety created when a working reverse die had the letter E in STATES initially punched as an A by the Mint's letter punch operator, then corrected by overpunching with the proper E. Traces of the original A remain visible beneath the corrected E under magnification, particularly along the diagonal strokes where the underlying letter's geometry conflicts with the overpunched character. The error captures a small but telling moment of human craft at the Philadelphia Mint, where each letter and numeral was punched individually into the working die by hand, and the operator's slip with the wrong punch produced a permanent record now sought by Capped Bust variety collectors.

Specifications follow lettered edge era standards at 13.48 grams, 32.5 mm in diameter, and 89.24% silver alloy, with FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR impressed on the edge through Castaing machine application before the screw-press striking. Cataloged as Overton O-108a within the 1814 series, the variety presents the corrected E with visible remnants of the underlying A at the top portion of the letter, where the apex of the A protrudes through the upper horizontal bar of the E. Authentication requires confirming the specific E/A diagnostic on the reverse along with proper weight, diameter, and lettered edge character formation. The natural strike softness common to the period may appear at Liberty's hair and the eagle's claws, but central reverse legends should show acceptable definition for the diagnostic to be readable.

Demand comes primarily from Capped Bust die-variety collectors building comprehensive Overton sets, and certified populations at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) sit at modest levels across all grade bands. Heritage Auctions records show steady premiums for problem-free examples. For more on Reich's design and the lettered edge production era, see our Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
